Factors that affect a person's Seroquel dosage include the condition being treated, its severity, and if other medications are also being taken. In general, when treating schizophrenia, the starting dose is 25 mg. When treating bipolar depression and mania, guidelines call for a starting dose of 50 mg. If needed, your healthcare provider will quickly increase this amount to 300 or 400 mg.
An Introduction to Dosing With SeroquelThe dose of Seroquel® (quetiapine fumarate) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- The medical condition being treated
- The severity of your condition
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be currently taking.
As always, do not adjust your Seroquel dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Seroquel Dosage for Schizophrenia
For individuals age 13 years and older, the recommended starting dose of Seroquel for schizophrenia is Seroquel 25 mg, taken twice a day. Generally, your healthcare provider will increase your dose quickly within a few days, up to Seroquel 800 mg (taken in two or three smaller doses per day), if needed.
Seroquel Dosage for Bipolar Disorder
The dose of Seroquel for bipolar disorder varies, depending on the particular type of bipolar disorder. The recommended starting dose of Seroquel for bipolar depression (in adults only) is Seroquel 50 mg, taken once daily at bedtime. Your healthcare provider will generally increase your dose quickly within a few days, up to Seroquel 300 mg, taken once daily at bedtime.
For bipolar mania in adults, the recommended starting dose of Seroquel is 50 mg, taken twice a day. In general, your healthcare provider will increase your dose quickly within a few days, if needed, up to Seroquel 400 mg twice daily.
For bipolar mania in children age 10 through 17, the starting recommended dose is Seroquel 25 mg twice daily. Your child's healthcare provider will probably increase the dosage fairly quickly as necessary. The maximum recommended dosage for this use in children is 600 mg total per day (given as two or three smaller doses per day).
Seroquel is also approved for maintenance (ongoing) treatment of bipolar disorder (to help prevent or reduce bipolar symptoms or relapses) in adults, when used in combination with lithium (Eskalith®, Lithobid®) or divalproex (Depakote® Depakote® ER). For this use, a Seroquel dose of 400 to 800 mg per day (split into two smaller doses per day) is recommended.
