Risperidone Use in Children

Risperidone is approved to treat irritability associated with autism in children age 5 to 16 years old. Risperidone has not been approved for treating bipolar disorder in children or for treating childhood schizophrenia. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using risperidone for children.
 

Off-Label Risperidone Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend risperidone for something other than the conditions discussed above. This is called an "off-label" use. Some examples of off-label risperidone uses include treating:
 
  • Behavior problems in elderly people with dementia
  • Other behavior problems
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Psychotic depression (depression with psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations or delusions).
