Risperidone Side Effects to Report
There are a number of side effects with
risperidone that you should immediately report to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
- Signs of diabetes, such as high blood sugar, increased thirst, frequent urination, and/or extreme hunger (see Risperdal and Diabetes)
- Large or rapid weight gain
- Depression or suicidal thoughts
- A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Dizziness or fainting when going from a sitting or lying-down position to standing
- Feelings of internal restlessness or jitteriness
- Strong uncontrollable muscle contractions
- Breast enlargement or breast pain in men
- Any abnormal muscle movements (these abnormal movements can become permanent if risperidone is not stopped quickly)
- Signs of an allergic reaction, including an unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Less Common Risperidone Side Effects
There are other, less common risperidone side effects that can occur. These side effects occur in less than 2 percent of people taking risperidone. For these side effects, it is difficult to tell whether risperidone or something else causes the side effect.
