Olanzapine Dosing

Olanzapine Dosage for Injectable Forms

Short-acting olanzapine injection is used to treat agitation due to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and is typically used in dosages ranging from 2.5 to 10 mg injected intramuscularly (into a muscle) as needed to control the agitation, up to 30 mg per day.

The newest form of olanzapine (long-acting Zyprexa Relprevv™ injection) is approved to treat schizophrenia. The dosage is usually calculated using the patient's current oral olanzapine dosage (since most people starting Zyprexa Relprevv are switching from an oral form of olanzapine). Zyprexa Relprevv doses range from 150 mg every two weeks (or 300 mg every four weeks) up to 300 mg every two weeks. This form of olanzapine is given as an injection into the gluteal muscle.

Because Zyprexa Relprevv can cause serious side effects (such as a coma or delirium) shortly after the injection, you must stay at the healthcare facility under the observation of your healthcare provider for at least three hours after each injection.

General Olanzapine Dosage Information

Some considerations for people taking olanzapine include:

  • Olanzapine is available in several forms, including regular tablets and tablets that are meant to dissolve rapidly in the mouth. These tablets are called Zyprexa Zydis® tablets.

  • Regular olanzapine tablets should be taken with a glass of water. Zyprexa Zydis tablets do not need to be taken with water.

  • Your olanzapine dosage can be taken with or without food.

  • A long-acting injection form (known as Zyprexa Relprevv) is available and is given just once every two or four weeks. A short-acting injection form is also available.

  • Oral forms of this medication should be taken at the same time each day to maintain even levels of the drug in your blood.

  • If olanzapine causes bothersome drowsiness or dizziness for you, ask your healthcare provider if you can take your olanzapine at bedtime to decrease these side effects.

  • For olanzapine to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Olanzapine will not work if you stop taking it.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or olanzapine dosing in general, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking olanzapine without first discussing it with your healthcare provider (see Withdrawal From Zyprexa).
