Depakote Dangers

There are certain potential dangers associated with Depakote^® (divalproex sodium) that you should be aware of before starting the medication.

 

This prescription drug can cause a number of potentially dangerous side effects, including depression, severe abdominal pain (a sign of pancreatitis), low body temperature below 95 degrees F (hypothermia), and yellow eyes or skin (a sign of liver damage).

 

You should not take Depakote if you have liver disease or a urea cycle disorder (a problem with the enzymes that clear ammonia from the body, leading to high ammonia levels in the blood). In order to help minimize any potential Depakote dangers, tell your healthcare provider about all other existing medical conditions you have before starting this medication.
