Bipolar Disorder Home > Abilify Dangers
Abilify® (aripiprazole) is a prescription drug commonly used for treating bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, autism, and depression (when used in combination with antidepressants).
Before you begin treatment with Abilify, dangers associated with the use of psychotic medications should be discussed with your healthcare provider. The FDA has issued a special "black box warning" about the use of Abilify in elderly people with dementia or psychosis. Elderly people with dementia (Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia) who are treated with antipsychotics -- including Abilify -- are more likely to die (of various causes) than those who are not treated with those medications.
It is also important to know that a number of potentially serious side effects have been reported with this medication. You should notify your healthcare provider right away if you experience suicidal thoughts, rapid or excessive weight gain, or dizziness or fainting when going from a sitting or lying-down position to standing.
