When to Take Depakote

Depakote® (divalproex sodium) is a prescription drug used for treating epilepsy, preventing migraines, and treating mania associated with bipolar disorder. It is generally taken several times a day, depending on the specific condition being treated.

Many people may not know when to take Depakote. It does not matter what time of day you take this medication, as long as you take it at the same times each day (to maintain even drug levels in your blood). Depakote can be taken with or without food; if the drug upsets your stomach, try taking it with a meal or a little bit of food.

If you do not take your dose as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you miss any of your Depakote doses, as this information may be helpful in adjusting your dosage.
