Depakote Risks

In general, Depakote® (divalproex sodium) is tolerated very well. However, some people may develop side effects or other complications with this medication. Before you start taking Depakote, risks associated with the drug should be carefully reviewed.
 
As with any medication, side effects are possible with Depakote. Some of the most common side effects that have been reported with this medicine include vomiting, shakiness, weakness, and headaches. In most cases, such side effects are minor and either do not require medical attention or can be treated easily.
 
However, there are also a number of less common but potentially dangerous problems that have been reported with Depakote. This medicine may cause liver failure, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), hypothermia (a body temperature below 95 degrees F), low blood platelets, and severe allergic reactions.
