Depakote and Breastfeeding
Depakote® (divalproex sodium) passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you have been prescribed Depakote and are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding, make sure to tell your healthcare provider.
Depakote passes through breast milk in humans. Although the full risks of taking Depakote during breastfeeding are unknown, most documented cases suggest there is little risk to breastfed infants. Many healthcare providers consider Depakote to be safe during breastfeeding. Still, if your healthcare provider recommends taking Depakote while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child.
It is important to talk with your healthcare provider about Depakote and breastfeeding. Everyone's situation is different, and your healthcare provider understands your situation best. After considering what you want and expect (and your current health situation), you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about Depakote and breastfeeding for your particular situation.
