Bipolar disorder, also referred to as manic-depressive illness, is characterized by episodes, or cycles, of mania and depression. The disorder usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. Between episodes of mania and depression, most people with this condition are free of symptoms. However, as many as one-third of people have some residual symptoms. Some people suffer for years before their bipolar disorder is properly diagnosed and treated.
