Unlike the normal ups and downs most people experience in their lifetime, bipolar disorder involves more severe symptoms. This long-term illness can lead to damaged relationships, poor job performance, and even suicide. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic-depressive illness, as it involves episodes of mania and depression. Between episodes, most people with bipolar disorder are free of symptoms, but as many as one-third of people have some residual symptoms.
