Bipolar disorder causes episodes of highs and lows, otherwise known as mania and depression. During an episode of mania, a person may experience overly "high" symptoms, such as increased energy, denial that anything is wrong, and an unrealistic belief in one's abilities. However, during an episode of depression, someone with bipolar disorder will have a dramatic mood swing that causes feelings of hopelessness, oversleeping, and even thoughts of death or suicide.
