Side Effects of Asenapine

Common Side Effects

Asenapine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking asenapine were documented and compared to those that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). This way, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.
In these studies, the most common asenapine side effects included:
  • Drowsiness -- in up to 24 percent of people
  • Insomnia -- up to 16 percent
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (see the next section for more information) -- up to 12 percent
  • Headache -- up to 12 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 11 percent.
Other common problems, occurring in 2 to 7 percent of people, included:

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking asenapine. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you develop something that "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the medication, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
