Negative Effects of Abilify

Abilify® (aripiprazole) is a prescription medicine approved for treating several mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, autism, schizophrenia, and depression.

In order to help ensure a safe treatment process, you should talk to your healthcare provider about the negative effects of Abilify before treatment begins. It is important to know that the medication could cause a number of side effects, including indigestion or heartburn, weight gain, insomnia, and headaches.

There are also some serious problems that may occur with Abilify. This medicine can cause a potentially permanent condition involving unusual and uncontrollable body or face movements (known as tardive dyskinesia). It can also increase the risk of seizures, increase blood sugar levels (which may lead to diabetes), and cause a life-threatening condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
