Abilify Sexual Side Effects

Priapism, changes in libido, and impotence are sexual problems that have been reported with Abilify. If sexual problems do occur during treatment with Abilify, it is difficult to know whether they are caused by the condition being treated or by Abilify itself. If you develop any Abilify sexual side effects, be sure to talk with your healthcare provider. He or she may recommend treatment, adjust your Abilify dosage, or prescribe another medication for your condition.

An Overview of Abilify Sexual Side Effects

Abilify® (aripiprazole) is known to cause certain sexual side effects. Abilify sexual side effects may include:

Abilify and Sex Drive
Abilify is known to cause changes in sex drive (known as libido). In clinical studies documenting the side effects of Abilify, a decreased or increased sex drive affected between 1 in every 100 and 1 in every 1,000 people.

Abilify and Impotence
Impotence is a relatively rare side effect of Abilify. Between 1 in every 100 and 1 in every 1,000 men taking Abilify have reported problems with impotence.

Abilify and Priapism
Priapism is a very rare side effect of Abilify, occurring in less than 1 in every 1,000 men. Priapism is a painful erection of the penis that does not go away, even after sexual intercourse or masturbation. If left untreated, priapism can lead to permanent damage to the penis. For this reason, it is very important to seek medical attention immediately if you think you are having symptoms of priapism. Even though this may seem embarrassing, it is necessary to avoid permanent damage to the penis. If your healthcare provider is not available, you should seek emergency medical care.
