Abilify Risks

Abilify^® (aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic medication commonly prescribed to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.

 

In order to help ensure a safe treatment process with Abilify, risks associated with the use of antipsychotics should be reviewed with your healthcare provider ahead of time. It is important to know that Abilify may cause a number of problems, including a life-threatening condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia (a condition involving unusual, uncontrollable body or face movements), and an increase in blood sugar levels (which could lead to diabetes).

 

Abilify has also been shown to cause certain side effects. Some of the most common side effects that have been reported with this medicine include constipation, headaches, anxiety, and insomnia. While most side effects of Abilify are minor and do not require medical attention, some are potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider immediately, including suicidal thoughts, rapid or excessive weight gain, or any abnormal muscle movements.
