Abilify and Diabetes (Cont.)

Final Thoughts on Abilify and Diabetes

It appears that Abilify may increase the risk of diabetes. It is not clear if this is due to weight gain (which often leads to diabetes) or other factors. Because diabetes can have serious health consequences and, in some cases, may be life-threatening, your healthcare provider should monitor your blood sugar (and weight) regularly during treatment with Abilify. He or she should also take appropriate steps to prevent or treat diabetes. It is also important that anyone taking Abilify be aware of possible signs or symptoms of diabetes. These include but are not limited to:

  • Increased hunger
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting.

If you already have diabetes, be sure to check your blood sugar levels regularly to make sure your diabetes is not getting worse.
