Abilify and Breastfeeding
Because Abilify could potentially cause serious side effects in a nursing infant, the manufacturer does not recommend taking the medicine while breastfeeding. If you are thinking of breastfeeding and Abilify has been prescribed, let your healthcare provider know. Together you can make a shared decision based on your particular situation.
It is not known if Abilify® (aripiprazole) is passed through breast milk. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of Abilify does not recommend Abilify use in breastfeeding women. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding and have been prescribed Abilify, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.
Abilify passes through breast milk in rats. However, it is not known if Abilify passes through breast milk in humans. If your healthcare provider recommends taking Abilify while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child.
You should talk with your healthcare provider about Abilify and breastfeeding. Everyone's situation is different, and your healthcare provider understands your situation best. After considering what you want and expect (as well as your current health situation), you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about Abilify and breastfeeding for your particular situation.
