Abilify and Breastfeeding

Because Abilify could potentially cause serious side effects in a nursing infant, the manufacturer does not recommend taking the medicine while breastfeeding. If you are thinking of breastfeeding and Abilify has been prescribed, let your healthcare provider know. Together you can make a shared decision based on your particular situation.

Is Abilify Safe While Breastfeeding?

Abilify® (aripiprazole) is passed through breast milk. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of Abilify does not recommend Abilify use in breastfeeding women. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding and have been prescribed Abilify, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.

What Does the Research Say?

Abilify passes through breast milk in humans. However, it is not known what problems (if any) this would be likely to cause for a nursing baby. Serious side effects might be possible.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should talk with your healthcare provider about Abilify and breastfeeding. Everyone's situation is different, and your healthcare provider understands your situation best. After considering what you want and expect (as well as your current health situation), you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision that is right for you.
