For some people, Abilify may cause bothersome side effects or may not work as well as needed. In these cases, healthcare providers may recommend alternatives to Abilify. Among these alternative treatments for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are therapy and other medications. Lithium, buspirone, and pindolol are some of the drugs that are used as Abilify alternatives for depression augmentation treatment.
An Overview of Abilify Alternatives
Abilify® (aripiprazole) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat the following conditions:
- Bipolar disorder
- Major depression (when antidepressants are not adequate, to be used along with antidepressants)
- Irritability associated with autism.
Abilify is part of a group of atypical antipsychotics or second-generation antipsychotics. For most people, Abilify is effective at treating symptoms of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (see Symptoms of Depression, Bipolar Disorder Symptoms, Autism Symptoms, or Symptoms of Schizophrenia). Most people also tolerate the medication well.
However, as with all medicines, it is possible that side effects may occur during treatment with Abilify. Also, in some situations, the medicine may not adequately control a person's symptoms. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to Abilify for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia treatment, including:
- Other medications.
